ADVIA® Autoslide Routine Operations Online Training

Prepare the instrument for slide processing, list the options to run a Daily Startup cycle, and define the options for processing slides on the system. This clinical laboratory training qualifies for continuing education units (CEU).

Welcome to the Dimension Vista Pre-I Meeting Online Training Course.  The Pre-Installation Meeting is an important aspects of the installation process.  This meeting, while allowing the Siemens team to assess the specific analyzer setup requirments, also provides an opportunity for the application specialist to have intergral conversations with customer to ensure an efficient installation focused on an optimzied workflow. When reagent levels are low or the expiration date has passed it is time to load new reagents. The ADVIA® Autoslide reagents are:   Stain   Buffer   Methanol   Rinse   Water The levels and expiration dates of reagents are located in the Reagent Log. Remember to prime the lines for any new reagent. Loading Reagents Learn more about the steps to load reagents. The Reagent Inventory screen displays the reagent information.  Reagents can be primed in the Reagent Inventory screen. To enter new reagent information, you must access the Reagent Installation screen by selecting the Reagent Installation left-side button.  Enter Lot NumberHTML For each new reagent, enter the Reagent Volume, Lot Number, and Expiration Date. If using the same bottle of stain for stain 1 and stain 2, the volumes need to be adjusted for the reagent alarms to work properly. IMPORTANT: Both the Modified Wright and the Wright Giemsa Methods use the same reagent bottle for Stain 1 and Stain 2.  When using only one bottle of stain, Stain 1 and Stain 2 are used at different rates. For the reagent alarms to work properly, you must determine the volumes to enter using the following calculations.       Stain 1 = Bottle Volume - Stain 2 Volume (calculate Stain 2 volume first)       Stain 2 = Bottle Volume x Dilution Ratio (the dilution ratio is defined in the staining profile) Save changesHTML Select OK.  PrimeHTML Select the number of cycles to prime by using the arrows next to the Prime Cycles box.  Next, select OK to initiate the reagent prime.  Prime if bubbles remainHTML If bubbles remain in the reagent lines, prime the lines again using the Reagent Inventory window. When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue.   Load slides and racks as part of the daily startup. Use only slides provided by Siemens. Racks can be loaded at any time. Loading Supplies Learn how to load supplies. Tab TitleTextLoad Slides When storing and handling microscope slides, follow these precautions: Microscope slides should be rotated when stored. To prevent moisture contamination, store the slides off the floor. To minimize temperature and humidity changes, keep slides away from doors and heating or air conditioning ducts. Remember, slides do not have to be old to be affected by moisture. Before opening slides, allow them to come to room temperature in the lab.  When loading slides: Avoid touching slide surfaces with your fingers. Make sure that frosted control-painted areas of the slides are all facing up. Make sure that slides are not stuck together before loading. Make sure to load the slides in the correct orientation. The frosted, painted area must be facing up and on the left-hand side of the stack. Insert a stack of slides as shown in the image. The slide dispenser can hold up to 160 slides.    Load Racks Load at least two racks into the rack loader so there are enough racks to start a run. The rack loader can hold up to 9 racks at a time. Load the racks as shown here, with the grooves facing upwards.    Check Smearing Tape Status View the smearing tape status in the Autoslide Startup screen.  Replace the smearing tape if the number is too low. When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue.   The stain waste is collected in a container located behind the system. Empty the container periodically or whenever the system indicates that the container is full. Dispose of waste according to local regulatory requirements. WARNING: Make sure that the Autoslide is not processing slides while you disconnect the stain waste container. IMPORTANT: Local laws and regulations protect the environment and encourage resource conservation by regulating the disposal of hazardous wastes. Because some of the wastes generated by the analyzer may be classified as hazardous waste, you must be familiar with the applicable hazardous waste handling and disposal laws and regulations in your area. When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue. Your system can be customized to run the startup and shutdown procedures at a preset time. However, if the system is not set to do so, or if you are starting it at a different time, the startup and shutdown procedures can be initiated manually.   Startup Procedure Learn more about the steps to manually start the startup procedure. Checklist TitleChecklist TypeChecklist ContentNavigate to Auto CyclesHTML The Autoslide can be programmed in the Auto Cycles screen under the Analyzer Setup tab,  to automatically perform the daily shutdown and startup procedures.  Select each checkbox to learn more about Daily Startup.  Schedule Shutdown with Wash CycleHTML The Autoslide shutdown procedure can be scheduled to coincide with the daily wash cycle for the ADVIA® 2120i. Schedule the Autoslide shutdown time a few minutes later than the ADVIA 2120i scheduled system wash.  This ensures the system will be in the Ready operating mode for the Autoslide shutdown cycle to begin. Enter the shutdown time using a 24 hour clock .   Enter the Startup TimeHTML The Autoslide Startup time can be scheduled to startup with the next system startup or it can be programmed to startup a minimum of 37 minutes after the scheduled  shutdown time for the  Autoslide. Make sure the Autoslide startup time is a few minutes later than the ADVIA 2120i startup time.  This ensures the system will be in the Ready operating mode for the Autoslide startup cycle to begin.  Enter the startup time using a 24 hour clock.  Click SaveHTML Click Save to save the changes before leaving this screen. Once changes are saved, the Startup cycle will occur automatically. Always remember to exit the Customize menu to return to the normal operating mode. At the Operations menu, select Autoslide Control. Select each checkbox to learn more about the steps to manually start the shutdown procedure.  Select ShutdownHTML Make sure the ADVIA 2120i is in the "Ready to Run" operating mode. In the Autoslide Control tab, select Shutdown and then select Start to begin the cycle.   View Shutdown StatusHTML When shutdown is complete the Autoslide indicator turns yellow and the message "ASL - Stainer under methanol" appears on the second status line.  After the daily shutdown has occurred, a Daily Startup must be performed before resuming operation of the Autoslide. When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue. Options for processing slides: Slides are produced from samples run on the ADVIA 2120i based upon customer criteria that is customized in Slide Options. A manually made smear can be stained on the Autoslide by inserting the slide in the manual inlet door.   Criteria for Making a Slide Learn about the criteria for making a slide. Tab TitleTextSlides on all samples Select the "Slides on all samples"  option to set the system to make a slide for every sample that is run on the ADVIA 2120i system.    By Exception Select "By Exception" to set the criteria that determine samples for which the system will prepare slides. When you choose this option, the Exception Criteria checkboxes become available. Select the criteria you want to set and then select Save; the corresponding buttons on the left side of the window becomes active. Select a button to open the window for setting those criteria.      Enable criteria on Manual samples Select "Enable criteria on Manual samples" to cause the system to add a "Slide" test to the workorder of any manually aspirated sample on the ADVIA 2120i system that meets the slide by exception criteria to show that slide production is necessary. When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue.   Staining a Manually Made Smear Learn about staining a manually made smear. The Autoslide system software will not allow manual smear operation while the ADVIA 2120i is processing samples. At the Operations menu, select Autoslide Control. Select each checkbox to learn more about staining a manual smear. Use Autoslide Control to open doorHTML In the Autoslide Control tab, select the Manual/Inlet Door option and then select Start. The manual inlet door is opened using the software. Insert smearHTML When the door opens, insert the slide into the holder door with the blood smear on the right side of the slide and the frosted end up. Make sure the slide is fully seated in the holder; if the slide does not rest on the bottom peg, it may break. Close doorHTML Close the Manual/Inlet door. When the system is ready to process the slide, the manual cycle starts; this may take up to 30 seconds. The slide is transferred to the staining assembly and the staining operation begins. Once the slide is in the staining well, the Manual/Inlet door opens for the next slide. Insert next smearHTML Insert the next manually smeared slide. If you have no more slides to stain, close the Manual/Inlet door and return to normal operation.   When complete, select the X in the upper-right corner to close the window and continue.   Download and print a copy of general tips about the Autoslide.   If the autoslide icon on the top right status line of the analyzer is red, the Autoslide may need attention. A red icon indicates that a critical error has occurred.  When troubleshooting the Autoslide it can be beneficial to view the messages in the Autoslide message log and to view the statuses displayed on the Autoslide Status screen.  The Autoslide status screen displays the physical status of several Autoslide components, as well as consumables and the software version.  The Autoslide status screen is located in the Autoslide Exerciser tab, under the  Utilities menu.  Under normal operating conditions all of the status boxes will be green except for Stainer Rinsed.  The Stainer Rinsed status will be red during normal operations.  Remember, when working with the Autoslide, be patient. It may take up to 30 seconds for a response from the system. Base ImageHotspotsText BlocksImage FileDuring routine operations, the Stainer has Methanol, Stainer Available and Stainer Primed status boxes will be green, while the Stainer Rinsed status box will be red.  If Stainer has Methanol, Stainer Available or Stainer Primed statuses are red, perform a "Reset Autoslide" function located on the Autoslide Control screen.  This is an intelligent reset and will drain wells and remove slides.  Note: The Stainer Rinsed status box will be green after performing the weekly shutdown procedure. The Smearer Status will be green during routine operations.  If any of the smearer statuses are red perform a "Reset Smearer" function located on the Autoslide Control screen. In some cases it may be necessary to perform a second "Reset Smearer" to eliminate the error. NOTE: When resetting the Smearer ignore the "Smearer Module not Ready" message. During routine operation the Consumables status boxes will be green.  If any of the status boxes are yellow or red, take the appropriate action. During routine operation the Stainer Waste and Stainer Water status boxes will be green.  If either of the status boxes are red, take the appropriate action. During routine operation the Rack Output Area and the Last Rack Used status boxes will be green. If the Rack Output or Last Rack Used status box turns red remove the racks from the output queue and place the racks in the rack loader. During routine operation the status boxes for the Manual Inlet Door, the Smearer Module Cover and Stainer Module Cover will be green. If any of the status boxes are red, close the appropriate door or cover.
