CT Scanner Hardware

This web-based training will introduce the learner to the most common components of today’s diagnostic Computed Tomography systems.  The hardware required to perform CT examinations will be reviewed and discussed including the gantry, patient table, computers, various input devices, storage media and accessories.  This training will provide fundamental information for those unfamiliar with CT, and offers a useful review for more experienced imaging professionals.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Identify the components of the CT Console
- Identify the Image Reconstruction System (IRS)
- Identify the Power and Water Cabinets
- Identify the Scan Unit and Accessories.

Welcome to Siemens' web-based training on CT scanner hardware. You should now be able to: Identify the components of the CT Console    Identify the Image Reconstruction System (IRS)   Identify the Power and Water Cabinets Identify the Scan Unit and Accessories By the end of the course you will be able to: Identify the components of the CT Console  Identify the Image Reconstruction System (IRS)   Identify the Power and Water Cabinets Identify the Scan Unit and Accessories CT Console: Monitors Central Processing Unit (CPU) Control Box Keyboard and Mouse Monitors: Visualize scanning software used to run CT system syngo - Siemens' proprietary software that runs the imaging equipment Built on Microsoft Windows platform Available across multiple modalities Central Processing Unit - CPU: Workplace computer Runs syngo software Stores image data CD-R/DVD-R: Exporting or importing of patient data Removable media should be considered transfer devices Not suitable for long-term storage or archival of patient imaging data Keyboard: Type characters, numbers, and commands into the syngo software. Mouse: Left Mouse Button (LMB) - click on and select objects Right Mouse Button (RMB) - context menus Scroll Wheel - scroll through images, adjust window/level settings Image Reconstruction System (IRS): Scan data that is acquired by the detectors is processed into diagnostic images Detector Data>Diagnostic Images>Acquisition Workplace Water and Power Cabinets: Water Cooled system - chiller cabinet pulls water in from the facility water supply, cools it, and circulates it through the gantry Air Cooled system - blowers filter fresh room air into the gantry and circulate it to cool the CT system **Note - Periodically check ventilation openings to make sure there is no airflow obstruction Power Distribution Cabinet: Connects the CT system to the power being supplied by the facility Voltage and Amperage are routed into the scanner to provide the electricity needed to run the system. Scan Unit: The hardware that enables patient scanning Gantry - Display, Control Panel, other components Table - Many different configurations and accessories . Gantry Components: Rotating x-ray system / x-ray tube and detector array Generator Motor drive Data acquisition system Unit control Laser light markers for vertical and horizontal positioning Cooling system Microphone and loudspeaker for the intercom system Gantry Display: Scan Parameters Table Positions Gantry Tilt Radiation ON Indicator Patient Name            Patient name                                  Radiation warning                                Delay time Table: Moves and supports the patient Variety of table styles and table tops available, all with different features and weight limits All tables support scanning a patient head first or feet first, prone, supine, or even decubitus     Accessories: Table Top Foot Extension Standard Head Holder Tiltable Head Holder Head and Arm Support Foot Pedal Sponges Table Top Foot Extension Extends the length of the patient table Standard Head Holder - positions and support the patient's head during virtually all types of head imaging Tiltable Head Holder - when patients are unable to hold a desired position for dedicated neuro exams Coronal Prone Head Holder - useful when true coronal prone sinus exams are required Helps to comfortably position patient's head and arms during the scan Allows the user to initiate radiation from inside the room Useful during CT interventional procedures Start a scan from inside the room on those systems that do not have a scan start button on the control panel Flat cushions Wedge cushions Pads Straps   Console: Monitors, CPU, Control Box, Keyboard, & Mouse Image Reconstruction System (IRS)   Power Distribution Cabinet Water Chiller   Accessories Scan Unit Gantray and Patient Table **Please Note**  Your system components may look different than those pictured in this presentation. Move the table or angle the gantry in a positive or negative direction up to 30 degrees Raise or lower table or move it out completely Start radiation in scan room Stop radiation in scan room Suspend or pause radiation in scan room Hear patient without being in scan room Call patient to deliver necessary scanning instructions without being in scan room **Note:  It is important to observe any motion of the table and gantry at all times in order to ensure patient safety. Table Styles: 1600mm - 1600mm scan range, 450lbs maximum table load 2000mm - 2000mm scan range, 500lbs maximum table load Multi-purpose table (MPT) - 2000mm scan range, 661lbs maximum table load Table Tops: Standard Table Top - used for the majority of all types of CT examinations Bariatric & Trauma Table Top - designed to support the weight of bariatric patients and also facilitate easier transition of trauma patients on to and off of the scanner Radiation Therapy Planning Table Top - designed to help facilitate exact and reproducible patient positioning in radiation therapy planning scans Note: Please consult your Siemens representative to learn which table tops are suitable for your table style and scanning needs   Scan Stop Horizontal Zeroing Fast In Presets A/B Unload Patient Laser Light Feed to Laser Fast Out Table Adjust Keys Gantry Tilt Scan Start Suspend
