General Laboratory: Blood Gas: Sample Collection and Proper Handling: epoc Blood Analysis System Capillary Sample

Instructional video about how to collect a blood gas sample for the epoc Blood Analysis System using a Capillary Tube.

instructional video about how to collect a capillary sample for use with the epoch blood analysis system and the care filled capillary tube. Follow your local hospital procedures to prepare the patient and collection site for obtaining the blood sample. Blood analysis, including Blood gas testing, is performed to test vital parameters in critically ill patients. Epoch blood analysis system gives information on a patient's pH, blood, gas, a basic metabolic panel, lactate and hematocrit values. Collecting arterialized capillary blood may be an alternative to arterial blood collection, particularly in infants and small children. The most typical site for capillary collection in infants is the lateral or medial plantar surface of the heel. However, the tip of the big toe, the Palmer surface of the middle or ring finger or the earlobe are also acceptable. Collection sites. In theory, blood gas values obtained from a capillary draw approximate arterial values. However, typically the PO2 values obtained with capillary samples may be lower. Ensure that you have all the materials you need to draw a patient capillary sample. These include a care filled capillary tube. A Lancet and alcohol wipe, gauze and a bandage. The careful capillary tube is a specially designed capillary sampling device for use with the epoch system. The care filled capillary tube contains dry electrolyte balanced lithium heparin as the preferred anticoagulant for blood gas analysis. The careful capillary tube is an individual sampling device that includes the capillary tube and adapter and a plunger. The white plug inside the capillary tube indicates the blood fill volume. The Blue Band indicates where to hold the careful capillary tube capillary sample collection from an infant heel is described in this video. Capillary sample handling after collection is the same regardless of the collection site. Prior to collecting a capillary sample from the infants, he'll confirm the patient's identity. Epoch Systems supports positive patient ID if access to ADT information is available to arterialized, the puncture site warm the skin to a temperature of approximately 42 degrees Celsius. Clean the puncture site. Do not use a skin cleaning wipe that contains a quaternary ammonium substance, such as benzalkonium, as it may affect the electrolyte parameters reported, particularly sodium. Let it dry. Puncture the skin with a disposable Lancet to a depth no greater than two millimeters. Wipe away the first droplet of blood. Gently apply intermittent pressure to the tissue surrounding the puncture to obtain blood. Hold the care filled capillary tube by the blue band. Hold the capillary tube in a horizontal position and make contact with the blood droplet. Placed the tip of the capillary tube in the center of the blood droplet. And fill the capillary tube to the white plug as rapidly as possible without air bubbles. Once filled, continue to hold the care filled capillary tube by the blue band and point the end of the tube with the blood upward. Gently pushed the capillary tube into the adapter until it clicks and locks in place. Apply pressure to the collection site and bandaged the heel. And transport the care filled capillary tube to the epoch system. The epoch system is designed for patient side blood analysis. We recommend that you test samples immediately after drawing to obtain results that most accurately represent the patients current status. If the testing of the capillary sample is delayed rolls a care filled capillary tube between your fingers to ensure accurate hematocrit results. Holding the blood filled care filled capillary tube vertically by the large end of the adapter, insert the capillary into the epoch testcard sample port and rotate the adapter a quarter turn for a secure fit. Push the plunger down in one motion to expel the blood into the test card. When you hear the reader beep, remove the care fill capillary tube by tilting the tube to one side and out of the test card sample port. Recognize that a sample containing air bubbles or blood clots should not be used on the epoch system because it can affect the accuracy of the patient results. The patient's results will be ready in approximately 45 seconds after sample introduction. Discard the capillary tube according to hospital guidelines. Proper sample handling, mixing and testing immediately after drawing helps to obtain results that represent the patient status with the greatest accuracy.
