This 5 part WBT series is for the user who is new to Siemens Biograph PET/CT scanners. It is intended to provide a basic introduction to the scanner and the syngo Acquisition Workplace user interface to help the user get started in providing excellent patient care. The second module of the series will introduce the user to the quality control procedures that are performed on the Biograph scanner. The topics covered in this module will include the sources and phantoms used for QC, the daily system maintenance procedures to include restarting the computers, CT Checkup, CT Daily Quality, CT Scanner Calibration, and other maintenance procedures.

When Checkup window appears, turn the power on to the syngo MI Workplace. The system is ready when the disk icons appear. Ensures optimum CT image quality Warms up the tube Performs calibrations Procedure: Retract the PHS Click the Checkup button in the window Press the START button on the Control Box when prompted       Calibration of the CT System CT value of water in Hounsfield Units Pixel Noise of the Images Tube voltages 1. Raise table to QC height. 2. Remove the patient head holder, if attached. 3. Slide L shaped phantom bracket into the receptacle. - Screw  bracket in tightly   4. Attach the QA phantom to the phantom bracket. 5. Turn the laser light marker on. 6. Move the table forward to align with inner laser. - The etchings on the QA phantom should be aligned with the inner laser Daily procedure to normalize variations in PET detector responses Determines readiness for scanning Includes: Daily Normalization based on phantom scan Computation and verification of ECF Normalization results display and sinogram inspection System quality report Option to perform procedures manually or automatically Partial PET detector setup Full PET detector setup when required Alignment Procedure Remove the patient head holder, if attached   Slide in the L shaped phantom bracket into the receptacle and screw tight   Attach the semi-circular phantom adapter securely into the bracket   Slide the PET uniform phantom into the phantom adaptor   Align the phantom as shown in the images    The PET Quality Check Procedure is a maintenance procedure for the PET system.  It should be conducted daily prior to scanning patients.  Click the tabs below to review the steps for conducting this procedure. Click Setup >> PET Quality Check Enter the phantom information. Ensure that it matches the data that is recorded on the phantom. Enter the CCF. Select the QC options: Partial Setup Includes: Quality Check, Normalization, Partial Detector Setup Time Alignment Includes: Quality Check, Full Detector Setup and Time Alignment Can be run with the Partial Detector Setup Full Setup Includes: Quality Check, Normalization, Full Detector Setup and Time Alignment Select method of phantom positioning. Click the START button. If you selected to manually position the phantom, a reminder is displayed. Click OK to continue.   Procedures Executed Partial detector setup Sinogram acquisition Sinogram inspection Normalization generation and ECF computation Report generation   Available Tasks •  View Sinogram •  View/Print Report •  Post Process •  View Trend •  Save & Close •  Green Check = Pass •  Red X = Fail Pass Fail Review sinogram before scanning patients. Click the View Sinogram button on Results window. Check for obvious artifacts, such as dark streaks.   Click the View Trend button to view the ECF Trend graph and the Plane Efficiency profile. ECF is calculated during normalization. Pass = Green checkmark Fail = Red X          Print Features Displayed in a web browser Select the File/Print button to print the report Automatically saved to a file Click the Post process button to restart the system if there has been an interruption in processing the Quality Check.   Saves normalization and phantom scan position If you don’t want to save the normalization, click the Cancel button No save option if QC fails Check the phantom placement Repeat QC If fails second time, run the PET Full System Setup If problem persists, call Customer Service   PET Quality Check Configuration Tab Select Position phantom with last saved value Phantom needs to be in phantom holder All computers must be on Select days Specify time Guarantees optimum image quality Performed as part of CT Checkup Should be repeated after: After the first 60 minutes of full patient load Within an hour prior to any patient scan Procedure Setup >> Calibration Press the Start button on Control Box   Degrades system performance Important if  using HIS/RIS system for scheduling Procedure Open Patient Browser (Patient >> Browser). Click on the Scheduler icon. Select Edit then Clear Scheduler. The tabs below outline the procedures for clearing network, local, and film queues.  It is important to clear these queues several times a day if they become full.  Not doing so could degrade the performance of the system. Network Access the Patient Browser (select Patient >> Browser). Select Transfer >> Network Job Status. Click Clear to clear all jobs.   Local Access the Patient Browser (select Patient >> Browser). Select Transfer >> Local Job Status. Click Clear to clear all jobs.   Film Queues Select Patient >> Film Task Status in any task card or in the Patient Browser (Patient >> Browser), or Click the Film Task Status button in the Filming task card or in the Film Preview window. Click Clear to clear all jobs. Routinely monitor disk space Remove un-needed patient data on a daily basis Recommended to archive patient data from the day before and part of QC procedures Steps will be discussed in Part 4: syngo Patient Browser and Data Management The tabs below include information about the Scanner Cross Calibration procedure.  Select both tabs to see more about this procedure. Cross calibrate the scanner to the dose calibrator to increase accuracy of Quantification. Calibration to be performed: At scanner installation New dose calibrator installation Replacement of Ge68 phantoms   3 Step Procedure: Run the PET Quality Check with Partial Setup. Calculate the Cross Calibration Correction Factor (CCCF) using a water phantom filled with a known amount of F18 and the Biograph PET•CT Cross Calibration Worksheet. Normalize and calibrate the scanner to verify a successful cross calibration of the scanner to the dose calibrator. System Cleanup Checks and defragments the disks Should be performed once a week Can take up to 2-3 hours to complete The tabs below include information about the System Cleanup and Shutdown Process for the syngo Acquisition Workplace.  Select each tab to learn more. Exit all examinations and applications. Remove all media from the drives. Shutdown syngo MI Workplace (if available). System >> End >> Shutdown. Select Yes to confirm. Shutdown the syngo Acquisition Workplace. Select System >> Run >> System Cleanup and Shutdown. Click Start on System Cleanup Window. When complete, the CT Scanner, syngo Acquisition Workplace, IRS, ACS and PRS will shut down. Wait 5 minutes after the System Cleanup and Shutdown Process before beginning the Startup Process   Press the System On button on the Control Box to power up   The system is ready for scanning when the disk icons in the lower right corner are visible   Features include: Sealed cylindrical source 20 cm diameter 27 cm long Up to 2.5 mCi activity Half-life 270.8 days Used with all Biograph mCT scanners (With or without TrueV) Used for: System acceptance testing PET detector normalization Setup Time alignment Test scans Select Setup >> Quality.   Click OK.   System will select the Quality Assurance Patient option then position the table so the phantom is in the scan plane and prompts to initiate the scan.   Press the Start button on the Control Box. First measurement starts automatically. Tube voltage for head and body Second measurement starts automatically. Evaluations for ROI, mean value of CT value, and standard deviation Images are stored: Temporarily in the Quality Assurance Patient Permanently in the Report Files Click OK to terminate.
