Absolute Shim in T-spine Imaging Job Aid 1. What is Absolute Shim? Absolute Shim is a technique to improve shimming results and the image quality in fat-saturated imaging of challenging anatomies such as spine imaging at 3T systems. Absolute Shim is based on a 3-echo GRE and evaluates the absolute B0-field / water resonance frequency in each voxel. The shim is calculated from this field map. The additional degree of freedom leads to better results in certain challenging field patterns. Please note: The impact of Absolute Shim on image quality depends on the anatomy of the patient and the system type as well as the FoV size and the orientation. The size of the field map, which the calculation is based on, is smaller than the field map of the standard shim, especially in the Head Feet direction. This may cause suboptimal shim at the edges of a large FoV. Image comparison: Standard shim Absolute shim Improved fat saturation with Absolute Shim in lower thoracic spine and/or lower cervical spine in the majority of cases, with minor residual inhomogeneities at the edges of the FoV. How can you activate it?
