Remote healthcare delivery – breakthrough, finally?

Remote work has seen a massive acceleration since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. For healthcare providers, remote work solutions can improve workplace safety, overcome capacity constraints and enhance efficiency and productivity.

This is Part 2 of a 2-part series on the implications of COVID-19, particularly on workforce and staff. This video is a presentation held during the 2020 European Congress of Radiology (ECR).

Welcome to the session on remote healthcare delivery. It's the second in a two part series that looks at the effects of the Cover 19 pandemic, particularly on health care workers and staff. In today's session we will cover. The expansion of remote work. How this translates into the health care setting and how will Siemens have the nearest can support you in this context? With our portfolio offerings? Let's kick it off with a quote from the Time magazine's magazine from February this year. The words largest work from home experiment. And it's true, but before hand was seen as luxurious, now became necessity, a strategy to reduce the pandemic and protect individuals. And if you look at numbers, we can utilize an online collaboration platform. In this case, Microsoft Teams as a proxy. With 516 million minutes spent in online meetings in mid March, increasing within only a few weeks by 8 fold. To 4100 million minutes and counting. So there was a big change in individual work lives as well as procedures or protocols. Did this translate to healthcare as well? From our customer experience as well as CEO quotes, we assume yes it did. Many are now working from home, which before hand we never thought would be able to provide health care services from home and even clinical care is provided through platforms. So if you now look a little bit at the time frame of remote work, the technologies are not knew. It's been there for quite awhile, however. However, the uptake was pretty slow. And now in the Cover 19 pandemic. The pandemic itself acted as a shock and uptake really increases, and this is particularly due to the reduction of barriers to remote work. If you think about legislation acreditacion the reimbursement peace and the acceptance of remote work in healthcare. In many geographies those barriers have been swiftly quite rapidly removed, and so we do see it now in additional remote work. And if you look into the future, we assume it's going to stay, so it's a breakthrough. If it now increases, like shown here in this diagram. This we can argue about, but we assume it to stay. And why? Let's look at the benefits. On one hand, we already said barriers have been removed, and many people now healthcare professionals as well as patients tasted remote work and have appetite for it to continue in the future. And also on the benefit side, remote work is quite attractive not only in the pandemic to protect the staff or the workforce, but in addition it allows to overcome capacity constraints, for instance. Regarding expert's, that are short. Plus it increases the effectiveness, the efficiency and overall productive productivity of healthcare services. Let's now look a little bit deeper into what does this mean concretely? And let's first start with a remote work that allows to connect the caregivers on one hand with the patients on the other. And here I would like to utilize the typical patient car pathway from. Diagnosis or surveillance to interacting with the caregiver, and. Evaluating if there is need to go into therapy to therapy itself. So let's start with the monitoring team. Play my care Companion is a solution that allows in chronic conditions that the caregivers enter patients, interact with each other so the patient would report patient outcomes. Patient reported outcomes as well as vital data and a center that surveys those results could interact immediately with the patient and ask for caregiver interaction. This leads leads us to the second point. The need of a consultation. In this could be part of a E health virtual visit which allows both to interact remotely with video as well as having the patient record and all the relevant information handy. It could be just being a diagnosis. It could be a therapy as well and the caregiver. For example, a physician could direct the patient into the appropriate care setting. If you go even further in the continuum of care and look at procedures, one example would be the corindus technology. And here in 2018 in India there has been a first try to ever distance of 30 kilometers that a surgeon provided a coronary intervention to a patient remotely using a robot. So from. Early on diagnosis, surveillance to interacting in a physical setting or not physical setting, but in a consultation to interventions. All of this is remotely possible and there is a lot more. This is just examples. Let's look at a different setting. Connecting workforce and workforce. Why would that be useful? It could be 3 instances. Accessible expertise. Joint decision making as well as. Training needs and satisfying those training needs. Let's go through the examples. The first one is a technology called single virtual cockpit which allows a technologist to remotely access a diagnostic imaging machine. So the on site individual that needs in a specific examination some expert advice. Has the option to let this expert that is remotely located access the same device, interact with video voice as well as chat and therefore jointly take a decision or guide the process or the exam. The second example is our E health solution. Here. In many cases it might be necessary to across institutions. Gather as a caregiver and decide on the next steps for a patient. The health solution here allows to do so exactly and not Only Connect with the video system, but as well provides access to the relevant patient data and therefore puts everybody on the same spot to taking the joint decision. The final example is the one of training needs in here our training portfolio. If it is PP, Connect the smart simulator as well as well as conferencing solutions to provide trainings. All of them can be utilized either by individual caregivers for their individual training or classroom virtual classroom settings, or for coordinators who look into the training needs of their staff and both of them. The caregivers themselves, as well as the coordinators can do so virtually from anywhere, anytime. So when thinking about remote solutions, they have rich distances. Which. As well in the pandemic now is very helpful because it helps you. Keep a social distance between somebody who might have acquired COVID-19 versus the caregiver. And on the other side, when thinking about limited expert staff, it's scalable and allow us not only to act one to one, but one too many at many to many as well. So if you are interested in profiting of remote strategies, we recommend a five step approach. First, we recommend that you make it part of your strategic plan. Second, select those functions or areas where you believe you can profit most. 3rd and 4th. Equip yourself and your organization with the right infrastructure as well as build remote work capabilities. And the culture of remote work. And finally. Analyze and measure the outcomes of the program and, where needed, adjust the entire talk has been part of an overall program where we did produce a thought leadership publication which is available within the inside series of Siemens having ears on the Siemens Healthineers Insights Hub. There is additional resources at your hand that you could appreciate. If you want to learn more about our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and clinical as well as operational portfolio that's available to support you, I recommend you visit our. Cover 19 hub. There's as well additional information. For instance on how to disinfect. Our appliances and modalities. Finally. In the pandemic, as well as before, seems healthineers enables health care providers globally to provide high value care with expanding precision medicine, transforming care delivery, improving the patient experience, and all of this enabled by digitalising healthcare. And with this, the talk has ended and I'm happy to take questions.
