Simultaneous Multi-Slice (SMS)

Simultaneous Multi-Slice (SMS)

SMS is an MRI acceleration technique based on simultaneous multi Slice acquisition. As the name implies, simultaneous multi slice acquires multiple slices at the same time instead of 1 after the other. For this it uses a multiband excitation pulse and spatially encodes the signals of the slices simultaneously. This means, for example, that an SMS Factor 3 excites three slices simultaneously with three excitation frequencies. During the acquisition, Blip type arenia is used to shift the different slices in the field of view. The slice greppi uses coil sensitivity information in slice direction to separate the different slices followed by the in plane grappa reconstruction. SMS accelerates imaging by a factor equal to the number of slices that are required simultaneously. The maximum acceleration factor is limited by the coil configuration and the number of elements in slice direction. SMS can also be combined with graph acceleration compared to the conventional parallel imaging speed up, however, SMS circumvents the signal to noise ratio loss associated with data undersampling. Acceleration is the main benefit of SMS. Depending on the clinical application and body region, SMS offers additional benefits ranging from higher volume coverage to higher spatial resolution, increased temporal resolution and shorter breath hold times.
