epoc® Blood Analysis System Care and Maintenance Job Aid

This job aid provides instructions on how to perform basic maintenance and cleaning procedures on the epoc® Blood Analysis System.

Care and Maintenance Job Aid epoc® Blood Analysis System The epoc® Blood Analysis System requires a minimum of care and maintenance. 1. The following general practices are recommended: A. Turn off the epoc Reader and epoc Host when not in use to conserve battery life. B. Store the epoc Reader and epoc Host in a secure location when not in use. C. Keep the epoc Reader and epoc Host in a dry location while using and during storage. D. Periodically check the condition of the wires and cables of the AC adaptor to check for wear and to ensure integrity of electrical conditions. E. Refer to the epoc System Manual regularly and ensure that the most current and up-to-date version is being utilized. 2.Cleaning/Storage Instructions: A. Do not expose any electrical contacts to cleaning solutions. B. Never submerge any part of the epoc Reader and epoc Host into any liquid.Never allow liq- uids to pool in Pivot or Membrane Switch areas. C. Keep the epoc Reader and epoc Host in a dry location while using and during storage. D. Never apply liquid anywhere onto the internal or external areas of the epoc Reader or epoc Host. E. Wipe with a damp, soft cloth or gauze pad to clean the surface of the epoc. F. Use a mild detergent, alcohol, 10% household bleach solution or non abrasive cleaner when cleaning the surface of the epoc Reader or Host. Clean the inside of the Readers card insertion slot. B. Clean a test card. C. Ottawa, ON Canada www.epocal.com 4.Decontaminating the epoc Reader or Host when blood is spilled: A. Prepare a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. It is recommended that the solution be prepared fresh daily. B. Soak several gauze pads in the bleach solution. When removing a pad from the solution, squeeze excess liquid, so that the pad does not drip on the system. C. Gently rub any areas of dried blood with one or more moist pads until they are soft enough to wipe clean. D. After removing any stained areas, clean all surfaces twice with fresh pads soaked in the bleach solution. Ensure that the bleach solution is in contact with the surface for three minutes before wiping off. E. Soak Fresh pads in warm tap water and squeeze excess fluid. Wipe all surfaces and allow them to dry before turning any of the epoc system components on. F. Dispose of the used gauze pads in a biohazard disposal receptacle. Remove the screw that connects the battery door to the Reader using a Phillips #0 or 3/16” slotted screwdriver (the type of screwdriver needed is dependent on the type of screw found in the Reader). B. Lift the battery door from the Reader. C. Carefully remove the battery from its compartment to allow access to its cable connection to the Reader. D. Gently unplug the battery from the Reader. Tweezers may be useful in order to pull the con- nector out. E. Connect the new battery connector to the epoc Reader. The connector orientation tab should be visible as seen in the picture. F. Place the new battery into its compartment. Place its wires into the compartment to the left of the battery. Ensure that the battery is lying flat without wires underneath or on top. G. Install the battery door by inserting its hinge at an approximate 30° angle behind the bat- tery. Pressure needs to be applied to the edge of the door in order for its hinges to snap into place. H. Secure the door by fastening with the screw using a Philips #0 or 3/16” slotted screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screw to avoid damaging the plastic. Remove the screw that connects the battery door to the Reader using a Phillips #0 or 3/16” slotted screwdriver (the type of screwdriver needed is dependent on the type of screw found in the Reader). B. Lift the battery door from the Reader. C. Do not move the battery or wiring; it is installed in a way that facilitates easy battery door replacement. D. Install the new battery door by inserting its hinge at an approximate 30° angle behind the battery. Pressure needs to be applied to the edge of the door in order for its hinges to snap into place. The battery door can then be closed into place. E. Secure the door by fastening with the screw using a Philips #0 or 3/16” slotted screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screw to avoid damaging the plastic.
