epoc® Performing a Whole Blood Test video includes identifying how to process a sample on the  epoc® Blood Analysis System.

Performing a whole blood test on the epoch blood analysis system. Performing a whole blood test requires the epoch host epoch reader, and a new epoch test card. Also needed are personal protective equipment when handling any patient blood specimens turn on the epoch reader by depressing the power switch. The power LED will turn green, indicating the epoch reader is on and ready for use. Turn on the epoch OST by pressing the power switch. The icons at the top from left to right represent the barcode reader available for use. Amount of charge for the Epoch host. And the wireless connection. Date and time are displayed in the upper right hand corner. Log into the epoch host using your login user ID and password. If applicable, tap the user ID field with the stylus. Then enter the user ID manually or by scanning your user ID barcode. Activate the barcode scanner by pressing any of the scan buttons on the epoch host. Point the light coming from the top of the barcode scanner towards the desired barcode until a beep is heard. The scanner turns off and the scanned text appears in the field previously selected. If the barcode is not available, the onscreen keyboard can be used by tapping the text input button at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Or by using the host keyboard. The password, if required, can be entered in the same manner as the user ID. Once the user ID or the user ID and password are entered, tap on login to connect to the Epoch reader or use the Enter key on the host keyboard. After a successful login, the Epoch host will search for available epoch readers to connect to host and reader. Double tap on the Epoch reader icon. Refer to host administration section in the Epoch System Manual for Instructions on dedicating the Epoch host and Epoch reader. When the host first connects to a reader, the test status indicator on the reader will turn solid green. The reader is ready for use. The screen will display insert test card to begin test. The Epoch Host and Epoch Reader are ready to begin a test. Select a properly stored epoch test card starting at the notch tear. Open the test card pouch. Remove the test card from its pouch. Never touch the sensor modules contact surface or blood sample entry port. Never place the test card on any surface before running a test. The test card should only be removed from its pouch immediately prior to testing. Position the test card with the sample port facing upwards. Insert the test card by firmly pushing it in a smooth single motion to enable the barcode on the card label to be correctly read by the Epoch reader. A slight resistance may be felt near the end. Continue to push the test card past this point to lock it into place. This is the final Test card position. Avoid abrupt stops or unevenness in speed during test card insertion. Appan correct test card insertion. The epoch reader beeps once and the host screen displays the test card lot number. The test status indicator will then start flashing green and the host screen will say calibrating do not. Inject sample. If the test card was inserted incorrectly, the test status indicator will turn red and an error message will appear on the host screen. Reading unable to read Barcode, remove and insert the card again. Once the test card is correctly inserted into the epoch reader, calibration fluid is released over the sensors. The calibration process takes approximately 165 seconds to complete. During this time, the user can prepare to obtain a blood sample. Patient information can be entered during card calibration. There are three tabs for entry. The first tab allows for patient ID number and displays the testing progress bar and status screen. Enter the patient ID using the keypad, the onscreen keyboard, or by scanning the pertinent barcode. Tapping the icon on the second tab will progress the screen. The second tab is the test information tab. Options listed here are ID 2, sample type, haemo dilution, temperature, reject test, comment section. The Haemo dilution question is a default required selection in certain areas. Answer Yes or no. Before proceeding if prompted. Refer to host administration section in the Epoch System Manual for Instructions on disabling discard option. Select sample type by tapping on the dropdown list and then tapping on the correct sample. If temperature correction is needed, tap on the text field and input the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit as appropriate. If the reject test feature has been enabled, check the reject test box. If you do not want the test results in the patient record. The comment text field may be used for recording additional information. Using the green arrow at the side of the screen, the user can access additional screens relating to respiratory therapy, age and gender. The test Selection tab is accessed by tapping on the third tabs icon. Here the test menu is displayed with checkboxes for various tests. To add or delete a test, tap on the checkbox a check mark in the box means that the test will display when results are complete. Return to the first tab. The calibration Progress bar will again display once calibration is complete, the message inject sample displays at the bottom of the screen and a progress bar appears to countdown the time remaining to safely inject the sample. Introducing the sample too soon or too late will cause an error and abort the test. A new test card must be inserted and the test procedure started again. Once a sample is obtained, dispense a drop or two of blood as volume permits. Hold the syringe barrel vertically between fingertips and thumb and perpendicular to the test card using slight downward pressure. Secure the syringes luer tip into the blood sample entry port of the test card. Rotate the syringe up to 1/4 turn to ensure a good seal. While maintaining downward pressure, use the index finger of the other hand to steadily depress the syringe plunger with a single smooth, continuous motion until prompted to stop. The reader provides an audible beep and the test status indicator flashes green, indicating enough sample for analysis was received. The host also displays analyzing sample. Once analysis is complete, test results will display on the Epoch Host screen. If the prompt enter patient ID to view test results is displayed. Enter the ID number and tap the save icon. Then results will appear on the screen. Note that other fields may also be required. Follow prompts to complete and save. Depending on the test selected, the results will display in tabular form. Tabs are gases, chemistries and metabolites. If a test was not selected but as needed, tap on the test selection tab, tap on the checkbox for the test desired and tap save. Additional information can be added and saved at this time. Once the test results display, the test card can be removed at anytime. Dispose of the test card in a biohazard disposal receptacle. When all testing with the Epoch reader is complete and all data entries are made, the test is closed by tapping on the Red X at the top right to close the Epoch Coast screen for that reader. Tap on the logout icon, Green Arrow pointing to an open door to disconnect from the epoch reader. Note that closing the test permanently saves the test and changes to that test are no longer possible. If desired, turn off the epoch reader and epoch host using the power buttons.
